FULL TIME FIREFIGHTER

A. NATURE OF WORK This is responsible skilled
work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. Work involves
training for and participating in the protection of life and property by
fire fighting, fire prevention, fire education, and rescue activities.
Work includes fire fighting, rescue, emergency medical care, and
efficient operation and maintenance of equipment. Although work is
performed under general supervision and established regulations, it
requires initiative, and an individual understanding of fire fighting,
fire prevention, rescue methods, and emergency medical techniques. Work
is reviewed by command officers through inspections, observation, and
results obtained.
B. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK As a lead person, drives fire
apparatus or other equipment to the scene of a fire, connects apparatus
to the hydrant, pumps water at proper pressure, and directs operations
until relieved by a superior officer.
• Lays and controls hose lines, erects and climbs ladders, perform
rescues, and participates in all fire fighting operations.
• Performs fire inspection work, pre-incident planning, and fire
education.
• Watches the operation of meters and pumps and makes necessary
adjustments or changes.
• Attends instruction sessions in such subjects as fire fighting
methods, equipment operations, hydraulics, street, hydrant and fire
alarm locations, and departmental activities.
• Instruct other firefighters in the operation of fire fighting, or
medical equipment and procedures.
• Assumes command of a company when so designated by a superior officer.
• Responds to rescue and emergency calls. Administers first aid and
emergency medical treatment as required.
• Keeps the fire station in a clean and orderly condition.
• Checks and maintains pumps, apparatus, and other fire fighting
equipment.
• Performs related work as required.
• Performs assigned vehicle and station maintenance.
• May be asked to fill-in as acting Equipment Operator.

C. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
• Thorough knowledge of modern fire fighting equipment and its efficient
use.
• Thorough knowledge of geography, streets, and important locations in
the Township.
• Considerable knowledge of elementary principals of hydraulics as
applied to fire fighting activities.
• Considerable knowledge of first responder, and emergency medical
techniques.
• Considerable knowledge of general fire fighting and rescue methods.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions, to accept
authority, and to work effectively with other employees.
D. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
• Education: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council - Fire Fighter I & II
certified.
• Michigan Department of Public Health - Medical First Responder
License.
• AED certified.
• Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council - Hazmat Awareness.
• Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council - Hazmat Operations.
• Current CPR card.
• Valid Michigan Driver's License.
• Completion of FFTC drivers training course.
• Meet NFPA 1582 requirements.
