Playing with Matches
- Matches and
lighters are adult tools, they are NOT toys and should be kept out
of reach of children.
- Matches and
lighters can cause serious burns.
- If found -
TELL AN ADULT YOU KNOW! DON'T PICK IT UP!
- It's all
right to tattle on brothers, sisters, or friends when they are
playing with lighters or matches. You could be saving their life
!
Smoke Detectors
- Our eyes,
nose, and ears all go to sleep at night. What doesn't go to sleep
and sniffs for smoke all night? (A smoke detector or smoke sniffer)
- If a fire
does occur the smoke alarm makes lots of noise to wake the family up
so they can GET OUT SAFELY.
- Everyone
should have at least one working smoke alarm at home.
- Remind your
parents to test the smoke alarm once a month and to CHANGE THE
BATTERIES WHEN YOU CHANGE THE CLOCKS.
DEMONSTRATE
SMOKE DETECTOR
Shout And Get
Out
If the smoke
detector goes off, or if you think you see or smell smoke in your
house, you should "shout and get out" - and take nothing with you!
YELL FIRE…..FIRE!
Crawl Low Under
Smoke
You have to go
under the smoke on your hands and knees. If you breathe in the smoke
it will make you cough, making you really sick. The bad smoke is up
at the ceiling and the good clean air is down near the floor. Always
crawl low when escaping a fire. Roll off your bed and get out
quickly.
Stop, Drop, And
Roll
If your clothes
catch on fire you should "stop, drop, and roll" (have one child come
up and help you show the class the right way. Place your hands over
your face and roll back and forth until the fire is out. Then yell
for HELP!
Kitchen Safety
- If there is a
fire in the kitchen QUICKLY TELL AN ADULT and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO PUT OUT A FIRE YOURSELF!
- Stay out of
the kitchen when mom or dad is cooking. The stove, pans, and food
are hot and can burn.
- What mom or
dad should do for cooking fires:
- Put a
lid on it
- Turn
off the heat
- Leave
the house
- Call
911 from a neighbors and help will come
Fire Department
Phone Number
Make sure your
whole family knows the emergency phone number and have it on the
phone: call 9-1-1 and help will come.
Getting to Know
Our Fire Fighters
Dress one
student in the pretend fire fighter gear.
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL FIRE FIGHTER
"Do you kids
think that fire fighters go into burning buildings in plain clothes?
Fire fighters were special clothes that keeps them cool and from
getting burned. All the fire fighters' special clothes are fire
resistant."
Don your turnout
gear with SCBA. Demonstrate to the students that you are still the
same person.
Helmet:
it is hard, has a brim to protect their neck and has a face shield
to protect their face
Boots:
they have a steel sole and toe, to protect their feet and ankles
Pants:
they are strong, easy to get into, and protect their legs
Coat:
three in one: rubber lining, cloth quilt (like a sweater), and
special outer cloth with bright tape
Gloves:
these protect their hands from cuts and burns
Breathing
Tank and Air Mask: Poisonous gases will hurt them, so they must
pack their own safe, clean, breathable air
All of this
equipment helps protect us when we fight building fires and make
rescues. It weighs between 60-70 lbs., and can be very
uncomfortable, but without it we could get very hurt.
